To provide life-saving and early recovery food assistance to approximately 2.5 million people whose homes and livelihoods have been destroyed by super-typhoon Haiyan—and who are currently living in evacuation centres and temporary shelters. WFP plans to assist around 2.5 million people with emergency food assistance, blanket and targeted supplementary feeding and expansion into asset creation with a specific focus on the families whose houses were badly damaged or destroyed by Haiyan.

The main objectives of this WFP project are the provision of life saving interventions and the preservation of livelihoods of the most vulnerable households in Burkina Faso. WFP will intervene in the worse drought affected areas, namely: the North, East, Center East, Center West, Center, Center South, Plateau Centrale, Sahel, Boucle de Mouhoun and Center North regions. WFP will also respond to the humanitarian needs of Malian refugees. This will be done through the following interventions: 1.Targeted food assistance (TFA): (consisting of a monthly ration for 6 family members) will be provided for a 4 month period (July October) to coincide with the lean season. Targeting will be informed by the results of WFP’s emergency food security assessment and undertaken in consultation with regional authorities and communities. Host populations of Malian refugees will also be included among the TFA beneficiaries (10 regions). 2.General Food Distribution (GFD): 100 000 Malian refugees, registered by UNHCR, will receive GFD ratios for 8 months. This assistance aims to improve the food security of Malian refugees and to stabilize malnutrition rates for children under 5 years of age. A Joint Assessment will be conducted in June 2012. 3. Cash and Food for Work (C/FFW): A mixture of cash and food for work will provide an incentive to 20,500 participants (corresponding to 123,000 beneficiaries) to carry out light conservation and rehabilitation activities, with the primary aim of covering the food gap of the targeted households. Activities will be carried out from April to June, prior to the onset of the lean season. The selection of participating households, as well as the identification and planning of projects, will be undertaken in consultation with regional authorities, partners and communities. WFP plans to support the Government’s response plan framework, as well as increase its coordination with partners and stakeholders involved in the emergency response.
